Make the Most of Summer: Tips for Building New Habits
Summer is here! For many, this season brings sunshine, relaxation, and a welcome change of pace. But for others, the shift in routines and schedules can feel unsettling or overwhelming.
When regular commitments pause or slow down, some people find it easy to fill their time with self-care and activities that recharge them. Others may struggle with the lack of structure, leading to boredom, frustration, or difficulty maintaining healthy habits.
The good news is that summer can be an ideal time to create new routines—especially when your schedule feels a little lighter. Whether you’re entering the season with clear goals or you’re not sure where to begin, here are some simple tips to help you build habits that support your well-being all year long.
1. Choose One Focus Area
It’s tempting to take on everything at once—more exercise, more reading, more cooking, more everything. But trying to tackle too many goals at the same time often leads to burnout and disappointment.
Instead, pick one specific area to start with. For example:
A new exercise you’d like to try
A skill you want to practice
A hobby you’ve been curious about
Focusing on just one thing allows you to build momentum. Once that habit feels established, you can gradually layer in new goals.
2. Start Small and Manageable
Many people give up on new habits because they set expectations too high right out of the gate. You don’t need to overhaul your entire routine overnight to see progress.
Break your goal into tiny, realistic steps. For instance, if you’d like to be more active this summer, resist the urge to plan two-hour workouts every day. Start by simply putting on your exercise clothes and walking around the block.
These small wins are important—they help you feel accomplished and confident, making it easier to build consistency over time.
3. Identify Your Best Time and Place
This step can make all the difference. Everyone has certain times of day and environments where they feel more energized and focused.
Take a moment to consider:
When are you most motivated? Morning? Afternoon? Evening?
Where do you feel least distracted and most productive?
Maybe you’re energized after lunch but lose steam in the evenings. Or perhaps your bedroom feels too cozy to be productive, while your porch or kitchen table helps you focus.
Choosing the right time and place to work on your habit can help you avoid distractions and set yourself up for success.
Ready to Get Started?
With a clear focus, small steps, and a plan for when and where to practice, you’re well on your way to creating healthy routines this summer.
Take that first small step today—and enjoy the process of building habits that help you feel your best, all season long.
